India’s Omicron patients reach 236
As the second year of COVID-19 comes to a close, a brand new variant called Omicron emerges and continues to terrorize people from all over the world. India is one of the countries that are affected the most by this and it has now tallied a total of 236 patients.
This news was following the devastating second wave of the COVID-19 virus which puts the death toll at around 300,000 already. It also doesn’t help that only a small part of the country’s population is vaccinated making the situation harder than it already is.
Omicron is a result of a virus that’s continually spreading and causing infections or in other words, a mutation. As of the time of writing, there are still several uncertainties regarding this variant but the World Health Organization encourages the public to continue observing the safety protocols that they have implemented. This includes social distancing, wearing face masks, washing hands frequently, staying indoors as much as possible and many more.
WHO also stated that these types of variants and mutations are all the more reason to believe that the pandemic is far from over. People are also encouraged to get vaccinated to gain herd immunity and to help combat the spread of COVID-19.
Additionally, a recent study concluded that a three-course shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine is effective in combating the Omicron variant.
Firhad Hakim becomes Kolkata mayor
On Thursday, December 23rd, a new mayor of Kolkata was named and it’s none other than the former West Bengal minister, Firhad Hakim. The victory was a landslide with Hakim clinching around 72% of the votes. Before his victory, Hakim was already well-known thanks to his leadership with the TMC or Trinamool Congress.
Explosion terrorizes the Ludhiana court
In an unfortunate event, 2 people were killed by a blast that occurred in Ludhiana court on Thursday, December 23. There are still some uncertainties regarding the attack but experts are speculating that the bomb was an IED or an Improvised Explosive Device.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Charanjit Channi has stated that the attack was done to terrorize the city prior to the assembly polls. Further investigation has also led them to believe that the explosion can be traced back to a bathroom on the second level of Ludhiana court. The explosion caused the glass from the buildings to shatter and it destroyed an entire section of the building.
